Give children the choice!
At Swim am byth - Northmead we always give the children the choice looking for signs of readiness. It’s great to see that the great Laurie Lawrence and Kids Alive do the Five are promoting this advice!
Before we can safely submerge a baby underwater we must ensure they have been conditioned. Conditioning teaches baby to hold their breath on our verbal cue. This will ensure their first underwater experience is safe and free of trauma. We condition baby by gently pouring water over their face after our trigger words "NAME, ready go". Once baby shows positive signs to conditioning we can then give them their first underwater experience outside of the womb. Each child will become ready in their own time. Positive signs of conditioning include, being happy and confident with water on the face, closing their eyes on your trigger words and observing them take a breath on your trigger words.
